A charger here is one public charging device, which can have more than one connector. DfT counts the devices reported as working and open to the public at midnight on each date. Its figures come from Zapmap's records of the open data that charge point operators must publish under the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023. Chargers per 100,000 people use ONS mid-2024 population estimates.
Power bands are DfT's: standard is 3kW to under 8kW, standard plus 8kW to under 50kW, rapid 50kW to under 150kW and ultra-rapid 150kW and above. "50kW and above" means rapid and ultra-rapid together.
DfT notes that one operator removed about 1,270 private chargers from its public data in June 2026, so some of the change between April and July 2026 reflects better reporting rather than chargers taken out.
We show counts by council because that is what the government publishes. There is no official list of individual charging sites: the National Chargepoint Registry has closed. Rank compares all 361 councils by chargers per 100,000 people, 1 being the most.
If you search by postcode, we look up its council with postcodes.io, which uses the ONS Postcode Directory (Open Government Licence). We do not store your postcode.
