What a recall is

A recall is issued when a manufacturer finds a safety defect in a vehicle, part or accessory. The manufacturer tells DVSA, writes to the registered keepers of the cars affected and puts the fault right, usually free of charge, whoever owns the car now.

If you get a recall letter, contact a dealer for that make and book the work. A car with an outstanding recall may not be safe to drive until it is fixed.

Check a specific car

A recall usually covers only some cars of a model, set by build dates or chassis numbers, so a model appearing here does not mean every car is affected. To check one car, enter its make, model and registration or chassis number on GOV.UK: check if a vehicle has been recalled. The manufacturer will also tell you whether the work has been done.

Buying used? A Motoring Insider vehicle history check covers outstanding finance, write-offs, theft and the full MOT history.

Recalls launched each year

Each recall is counted once, in the year it was launched, however many models it covers.
