Data, licences and method
- Chargers
- © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL v1.0); and Open Charge Map contributors, under CC BY 4.0. Each Open Charge Map charger also names its own data provider and licence, shown with the charger.
- Map
- OpenFreeMap, © OpenMapTiles, data from OpenStreetMap.
- Updated
- Every week, from one OpenStreetMap query and one Open Charge Map import. Your searches never call either service.
We take public charging stations only: places tagged private, customers only or permit only on OpenStreetMap, and private, planned, removed or not working sites on Open Charge Map, are left out. Where both sources list the same charger within about 30 metres, we show the entry with more connector detail. Many OpenStreetMap entries do not list connectors, so the connector filter hides them. Speeds use the Department for Transport's bands, from the highest power listed for each site. Volunteers keep these maps, so a charger may have changed: check with the operator before you set off.
The charger set we derive from OpenStreetMap and Open Charge Map is kept separate from our other data. As the ODbL requires, that derived database is available on request: contact us.
Postcodes are looked up with postcodes.io (ONS Postcode Directory, Open Government Licence). Our site then gets only the postcode's council code, to link to that council's figures. If you use your location, it is sent only to find nearby chargers and is not stored.
Opened from a council's page, the map starts from the middle of that council, from the ONS Open Geography Portal. Source: Office for National Statistics licensed under the Open Government Licence v.3.0. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right 2025.
